About Me
"God with a little bit of paint..."
Hi! My name is Katherine Dawson, and I am a 24-year-old artist.
Originally from Memphis, TN, my husband Noah and I moved to Beaufort during the Spring of 2020 with the military. Now that he is out, we have decided to call Beaufort our home.
We absolutely love this community! You can find us burning at The Sands, working at the Port Royal Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings, running like a crazy person on the side of the road *haha, and serving in our local church at Calvary Baptist.
As an artist, I am inspired by the many beauties of the Lowcountry: the marsh, sandy beaches, and vibrant florals. It truly brings joy to my heart to depict such things! However, since starting my art journey at the beginning of 2024 there has been an additional calling:
I am a mere 25% Japanese though I’m sure if I took a test, it would conclude less than what I would like to believe *haha. It comes from my dad’s side of the family with my grandmother, Toyoko, being the primary “middleman” to link our overseas family to our American one. Being so close to my grandmother, I feel a deeper pull towards my roots in Japan. As we grow older, I recognize that it’s up to my younger generation to bridge the gap between us and our Asian family. If we don’t, then there’s an entire history that becomes lost!
Over the past few months, The Lord has put it on my heart to begin learning both the written and spoken language of Japan whilst becoming educated in their history. My Japanese cousins are learning English, so I am motivated to do my part! My interest peaked when reading about the movement of Christianity throughout the country. It is concerning that over the past several centuries, Japan’s Christian believers have stayed under 2% worth of the population!
With this statistic in mind and my roots in their culture, I’m naturally drawn to Asian-inspired art with a twist: proper acknowledgement. In many Asian religions, they worship nature and hold high regards to keeping our world unblemished. Our surroundings are beautiful, and we should try our best to protect it; however, there has to be recognition to the one who created it all. Someone who spoke that marsh, that beach, those florals into existence. Someone who loves you more than you could ever humanly fathom: that’s our God, our Creator.
With artwork, my goal is to reach the lost and to tell people about the love of Jesus Christ. I have a place in my heart for the Asian community and God-willing, I am excited to see how The Lord uses this ministry to reach them and others! Especially my family! Though I don’t know what lies ahead or how these pieces will impact future owners, my prayer is that when you look at your new décor, you’ll see the beauty and take one step further to thank Jesus: God with a little bit of paint.
Titus 3:3-7 “For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
